Malia - Visualization

A section of Chapter Six that stood out to me focused on data mining and explained it in more detail. The textbook describes data mining as a process in which technology automatically identifies patterns in digital data. In digital humanities, we can use it to uncover details humans or authors may have overlooked. In chapter seven, a main idea that stood out to me was visualization. Visualization turns quantitative project information into visual data that's easier for readers to digest. It also allows us to analyze more data. These chapters are all about details. When we read a text, we often miss small details; in these chapters, the textbook explains how the technology digital humanists use scans our projects to find the details the human mind misses and turns those details into a simpler understanding. 

In the Six Degrees of Francis Bacon website and the Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow website, we see these ideas in the small connecting lines and dots that make the connections look detailed and thoroughly combed through. Specifically, in the Six Degrees of Francis Bacon, we see small individual lines, and when you click them, they show names, dates, degrees, and relations to Bacon. As a visual, the thread can feel overwhelming, but combing through it and clicking the lines makes it much more detailed and easier to navigate. I am unsure of the specific details about Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow because the website says the technology isn't updated. 

In my personal project, the visualization is a timeline that contains data mined from Wikipedia. It is a broader project that could represent distant reading because it does not display specific information at first glance. But with the hyperlinks to Wikipedia embedded within the timeline, users can choose to go into more detail.

    Hi Malia. I like your summarization of the chapters assigned this week. I also found it interesting to learn about visualization because we are exposed to this kind of content all of the time. The way content is presented to us is extremely important for any user. The simpler it is to navigate and digest data, the larger audience it will attract. Your project is particularly interesting to consider in terms of data mining and visualization process that goes into displaying timeline content. Data mining from Wikipedia is sure to bring up possible ethical issues, but it also allows for more user participation.

What is DH?

 Digital Humanities combines digital services with humanities materials. In its basic form, every digital humanities project starts with some kind of material. This could be texts, maps, sounds, media files, etc. While some materials are created digitally, most are not. This means that a process of filing, mediation, remediation, and data modeling is needed. The presentation of these materials is either web-based or offline. This could include platforms such as Google Sites or WordPress, or sites specifically used by digital humanists, such as Omeka, Manifold, or Scalor. Not all digital humanities projects are online. These can include hard drives, thumb drives, or other tangible materials. Another important distinction is that the presentation of the digital project is integral to, and relative to, the project's narrative. The project tells a narrative through the presentation itself.  Introduction :) September 2nd, 2026 Hiiii, my name is Mia, and I'm a Musical Theatre and Journalism double major. With my majors, I hope to become a social culture journalist, specializing in the arts and music.
